The Stave
Church, located on the grounds of the Hjemkomst Center, is
a beautiful symbol of the Norwegian heritage so prevalent
in the Red River Valley.
The Stave Church at the Hjemkomst Center is a full scale replica
of the Hopperstad Church in Vik, Norway. The church in Vik
is one of only 29 that remain of the more than 1000 Stave
Churches built in Norway during the 1000-1300 time period.
Funding to build the replica Stave Church at the Hjemkomst
Center was provided by Guy and Beva Paulson and Demaris Mathison.
Guy Paulson spent five years working on the construction of
the church, all carvings on the church were done by Guy.
Planning for building the replica Hopperstad church at the
Hjemkomst Center was initiated in 1996 and construction on
site 1997, the church was completed in 2001.
The church at the Hjemkomst Center is open daily for tours.
